An Englishman on French Lines
A photographic record between 1962 and 1967
Volume XXV of Train Images provides a new retrospective of the last
years of French steam, as seen through the eyes and lens of well-known English
photographer Hugh Ballantyne. The recently departed photographer made three
trips to France in 1962, 1963 and 1967 to cover as many engine classes,
locations and train operations as possible.
Most of the pictures are in colour and have never been published before.
The book, edited and written by Hugh’s friends, Didier Leroy and Gérard
Chambard, and translated into English by Richard Pelham, is full of period
detail and atmosphere. Hugh’s wife Toni has given the authors full access to
his photographs to create a lasting tribute to French steam.
